The 991 matters to collectors for two reasons, both of which arrived quietly. It was the first 911 with electric power steering, and it was the last Carrera generation offered with a naturally aspirated flat-six before the range turned to turbocharging.

This is the S, which means 3.8 liters rather than the standard car's 3.4, and 400 horsepower. Drive goes to the rear wheels through a seven-speed PDK, and 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.3 seconds.

Underneath, the 991 was a substantial rebuild rather than a facelift: an aluminum-steel hybrid structure that removed up to 45 kg while making the body stiffer, a wheelbase 100 mm longer, a lower roof and a wider front track. The mirrors moved to the doors and the headlamps sharpened.

The interior is the one most people remember from this generation. Porsche took the raised, sweeping center console from the Carrera GT and put the traditional five-dial cluster in front of it.
