Overview

The 996 was the generation that took the 911 from air cooling to water cooling — the largest single change in the model's history, and the reason the generation was argued about for twenty years. It is also the reason the Turbo works as well as it does.

Its engine is not the standard 996 unit. It is the Mezger flat-six, derived from the 911 GT1 that won Le Mans: 3.6 liters, twin-turbocharged, 420 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 560 Nm from 2,700 to 4,600 rpm. Here it drives all four wheels through a five-speed Tiptronic S. 0 to 100 km/h takes 4.9 seconds and the car reaches 298 km/h.

The shape sits between the 993's curves and the modern cars, with the headlamps this era is known for above three horizontal intakes feeding the radiators and front brakes. Extended sills manage airflow along the longer wheelbase, and the split-level rear spoiler raises its ducktail automatically at 120 km/h.

The cabin is full leather with the five-dial cluster in a single interlocking housing, a multifunction wheel, powered sports seats and a surround sound system.

This car has been restored — paint, upholstery and mechanicals — and is presented turn-key. The 996 Turbo has moved firmly into modern-classic territory, helped by the Mezger engine and by being usable every day.
